How to Choose a Standing Desk: A Buyer's Guide

Start with the frame, not the top

The desktop is the part you see in photos, but the frame decides whether you keep the desk for ten years or regret it in six months. Wobble, weight limits, height range, motor reliability, and warranty all live in the frame. Desktops are commodity slabs by comparison, easy to like and even replaceable later. So evaluate in this order: stability, weight capacity, height range, motor configuration, warranty, and only then finish and size.

Two-stage vs three-stage frames

The legs of a standing desk are telescoping columns, and the stage count is the number of nested segments in each one. It sounds like trivia and turns out to drive three things you will notice daily.

Travel speed on current desks runs from under 1 inch per second on budget frames to about 2 inches per second on the quicker dual-motor models, which is the difference between a 25-second transition and one that finishes before you have picked up your coffee.
